SPARKS LIVE! SPECTACULAR – 21 ALBUMS IN 21 NIGHTS

May 16th – June 11th 2008. Album No. 1 – Album No. 20 at Carling Academy, Islington,

June 13th 2008. World premiere of Sparks’ as-yet-untitled 21st album at Shepherds Bush Empire

Tickets on sale from November 29th

When faced with the challenge of what to do next, pop innovators and musical legends Ron and Russell Mael aka Sparks have, in the past, not just risen to the challenge but surpassed any expectations.

So when asked what plans they had for their 21st album (yes you read it right…“21st” album) their answer was typically audacious:

“How do we best unveil our new album, Sparks as yet untitled 21st? How about playing in concert every single song off of every album that preceded it, all 20 albums on 20 consecutive nights, culminating in the premiere of our latest? That's approximately 250 songs, or for you musicians, 4 million, 825 thousand, 273 notes. Come celebrate each and every one of those notes with us!” Sparks, Los Angeles

Not many artists can claim to have 21 albums in their repertoire. Very few of those could say that their 21st album is as groundbreaking as their previous work. Only Sparks would dare to take on this challenge – this mammoth undertaking, this melodious epic, this groundbreaking concept, this celebration of musical greatness past and present.

The Sparks Spectacular will be taking place in London in May and June 2008 - one album per night, played in its entirety, starting with 1971’s album Halfnelson and concluding with the brand new, as yet untitled, 21st album. The only concession made to man’s physicality is that, whilst the order of the albums will be chronological, there will be some days off during the run!

In addition to Russell Mael, the line-up includes Jarvis Cocker, Marianne Faithful, Beth Orton, The Residents, Robyn Hitchcock, Peter Murphy, Badly Drawn Boy and Alex Chilton.

The Record Producers: Tony Visconti
'THE RECORD PRODUCERS: TONY VISCONTI'

EMI is scheduled to release a 17 track compilation in July called 'The Record Producers: Tony Visconti' , which looks at his work as producer, mixer, arranger and more.

The album will feature two songs from the Sparks catalogue - Looks, Looks, Looks from the Visconti produced Indiscreet, and the Plagiarism version of This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us, which was arranged and conducted by Tony.

Track listing:-

01 Héros - David Bowie (French version of Heroes)
02 China Girl - Iggy Pop
03 Metal Guru - T. Rex
04 You Have Killed Me - Morrissey
05 Looks Looks Looks - Sparks
06 Will You - Hazel O’Connor
07 Chains - Mercury Rev
08 Oh Baby - Dib Cochran & The Earwigs
09 The Prettiest Star - David Bowie (original single version)
10 Flowers In The Rain – The Move
11 Sarah - Thin Lizzy
12 Love Is The Law - Seahorses
13 Band On The Run - Wings
14 This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us - Sparks (Plagiarism Album Version)
15 Got To Get You Into My Life - Surprise Sisters
16 Black Country Rock - David Bowie
17 Telegram Sam - T. Rex

From the main sleeve notes:-

Brothers Ron & Russell Mael were the heart of Sparks and with several hit singles and two hit albums under their belt, approached Visconti to both produce and arrange their 1975 album
‘Indiscreet’. They were looking to expand their sound outside of the conventional rock band format and knew of Tony’s skills as an instrumental arranger. Ron’s latest songs leant themselves to orchestral experimentation and Visconti provided the brothers with marching bands, fiddle hoe-downs, big band jazz and chamber orchestras to fit the mood of each song.

and accompanying the track This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us:-

In the same year that Visconti produced the Seahorses, (a new band looking for its first hit), he was back working with a duo he’d first met over 20 years earlier. The original 1974 classic single (kept off No. 1 by Rubettes ‘Sugar Baby Love’) was produced by Muff Winwood. When, in 1997, the Mael brothers revisited their song repertoire for the album ‘Plagiarism’, they contacted their old friend Visconti to provide a number of arrangements to give an unusual twist to a greatest hits compilation. Alongside ‘Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth’,‘Something For The Girl With Everything’ and others, Visconti arranged and conducted this string orchestral version. It includes a verse not heard on the groundbreaking original single - “Choosing, the girl is choosing......”

THE BIG CHILL 2006 On Channel 4

A repeat of 'Southern Comfort Fat Tuesday Presents The Big Chill' filmed at last year's festival is screened late night 12:45-1.45am, today (February 1)

The Big Chill 2006 programme received overwhelming praise from critics and festival regulars when it was first screened in September. The director Nick Morris captured the essence and spirit behind the Big Chill, committing its magic to celluloid in a way not used on festival documentaries before. Features include performance highlights from the 2006 Big Chill festival, including high-energy sets from Lily Allen, Coldcut, the Blue Man Group, Robert Owens, Sparks and many more. More than a show about music artists, we see the film crew trailing people around the enchanting site.

SPARKS - the Dick Around single!! We announce with great pride, the first US single from Sparks' Hello Young Lovers album. There will also be a CD EP which will include, in addition to the A-side track, (Baby Baby) Can I Invade Your Country (alternate lyrics), Happy Hunting Ground, Bon Voyage, In The Future (all recorded in Hollywood at the Avalon on May 20, 2005), an interview with Ron and Russell Mael conducted by Steve Jones (indie 103.1/Sex Pistols) and videos for the A-side, Dick Around, and Perfume.

BBC LONDON REPLIES
BBC London has replied to the numerous emails sent to the station with the following message:

"The track "Dick Around" hasn't been banned from BBC London; in fact it's already been played on other shows on the station. However, the breakfast team hadn't heard the track - because it's not a music show - and decided to err on the side of caution because of the title, and play the other side of the AA single to illustrate the interview."

Sparks management has subsquently replied thus:

"Firstly I would point out that a copy of the single and album was sent to the production team on 19th September which was more than adequate time for them to listen to the CDs

Secondly the AA side of the single was not played. Perfume was played which was released in February this year. Waterproof is the AA side.

The situation could have been handled in a much better way had the issue been raised with us last week and not on arrival at the station. Similarly the embarrassment for all concerned (including your hosts) would have greatly reduced had you played the correct AA side."

how extraordinary to judge a piece of music purely by the title on the outside of the case, rather than by the work contained within

SPARKS REACT TO BBC BAN
RON AND RUSSELL MAEL HAVE REACTED ANGRILY TO SPARKS' NEW SINGLE DICK AROUND BEING BANNED BY BBC

RON MAEL THIS MORNING RAGED: "THE BBC HAS OFFICIALLY KILLED OFF OUR NEW SINGLE DICK AROUND, OSTENSIBLY THROUGH RATHER CHILDISH OBJECTIONS TO THE TITLE, AN INNOCENT REFERENCE TO THE IDLE LIFE.

THAT A PIECE OF MUSIC CAN BE CONDEMNED PURELY BY ITS TITLE WITHOUT THE 'DECISION MAKERS' EVEN HAVING THE DECENCY TO OPEN THE CD CASE IS A TRAVESTY AND AN INSULT TO BOTH US AS THE CREATORS OF THE MUSIC AND TO THE LISTENERS OF THE BBC"

RUSSELL MAEL RESPONDED "THE REACTION FROM THE PUBLIC TO THIS RECORD HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT POSITIVE SO THE BBC SHOULD STOP TRYING TO BE THE MORALITY POLICE WHEN IT IS SO CLEARLY MISPLACED"

BBC BAN SPARKS
TODAY THE BBC BANNED DICK AROUND.

DESPITE THE FACT THAT RON AND RUSSELL WERE INVITED INTO THE STUDIO AS GUESTS OF THE BREAKFAST SHOW ON BBC LONDON 94.9PM, THE HOST JONO COLEMAN WAS BANNED FROM PLAYING THE SINGLE DICK AROUND

JONO AND HIS CO-HOST JO GOOD WERE OBVIOUSLY EMBARRASSED - PARTICULARLY AS THEY QUITE CLEARLY KNEW THAT THE TERM MEANS WASTING TIME.

RON AND RUSSELL WERE QUITE CLEARLY ALSO EMBARRASSED BUT ALSO APPEARED TO BE INSULTED THAT THEY HAD BEEN ASKED TO 'GET UP AT 6.15AM TO COME AND BE INTERVIEWED AND THEN NOT HAVE THEIR SINGLE PLAYED' AND WHAT SHOULD (AND COULD) HAVE BEEN AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW ENDED UP BEING A 15 MINUTE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE BBC BANNING THE SONG

Sparks Present Motown Made To Measure
Press release:

SPARKS PRESENT
MOTOWN MADE TO MEASURE

RELEASE DATE: MOTOWN MONDAY 19th JUNE 2006
Label: Motown / Universal
Format: CD
Catalogue Number: 9840015

MOTOWN MADE TO MEASURE is new series of compilations that will highlight the very special relationship people have had with the Motown label over the years. By inviting a select group of actors, musicians and DJs to select their favourite tracks, MOTOWN MADE TO MEASURE will be a very different way to enjoy the world’s favourite record label. Each CD will feature an extensive interview with the compiler by renowned journalist Paolo Hewitt. Following on from the critical success of Martin Freeman’s selection this February, Motown UK is delighted to have groundbreaking avant-pop duo SPARKS as the next compilers.

The brothers Russell and Ron Mael were born and raised in Los Angeles. They started their first band, Halfnelson, in 1970 and released an eponymously titled debut album in 1972. Under manager Albert Grossman’s insistence they then changed their name to Sparks, a pun on the ‘Sparks Brothers’ as in ‘Marx Brothers’. In 1974, they hit the No. 2 slot in the UK with their classic single, ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us.’ A succession of albums followed, characterised by the brothers high musical and lyrical intelligence. These works include Kimono My House, Indiscreet, Pulling Rabbits Out Of A Hat, Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins, Lil' Beethoven and their recent, highly acclaimed Hello Young Lovers. The brothers first heard Motown music back in the 60s on KHJ and Boss Radio. At the time they were not into black music per se but for them Motown transcended all categories and set them on an unforgettable musical journey. Hear the soundtrack to that journey here.

As anyone who saw them on their recent European tour will know, a Sparks show is jaw-dropping, and sensational - but dont take our word for it:

“Revel in the Maels’ mix of wit, drama and music you can dance to – Independent on Sunday

“Simply put, a sparkling performance – Daily Record

“If you want to please your fans and please yourself in the same show – this is how to do it” – Scotsman

Sparks will be performing Hello Young Lovers in its entirety, with 6 piece band and projections, followed by a selection of their greatest hits from their 19 previous albums. A show not to be missed.

The incomparable Sparks will headline the main “Open Air Stage” on Saturday August 5th at the Big Chill Festival.

A Sparks album is unique and their current record Hello Young Lovers is drawing unparalleled acclaim -

It’s so great, the rest of pop music might as well shut up shop – Uncut
“The music Beethoven would be making were he alive today” – Boyz

“Simply put, a sparkling performance – Daily Record
“If you want to please your fans and please yourself in the same show – this is how to do it” – Scotsman

Incredibly this will be Sparks’ first outdoor festival - “Playing a festival will be a new experience for us but it is one we are looking forward to. It will be great to put on our show in this outdoor location and for an audience who may not have seen us play before.” said Russell Mael

Reaction to Sparks new album Hello Young Lovers has been astounding -

“As innovative as ever” – Guardian
“The good news is that Sparks are still flying” – The Sun
“They still sound daisy-fresh. Inspired” – TNT

Sparks at Meltdown
Last night Ron and Russell returned to London's Royal Festival to perform at Patti Smith's Meltdown

The evening was entitled Stand Bravely Brothers and Sparks joined numerous other artists (including Marc Almond, The Finn Brothers, Antony, Martha Wainwright, Tilda Swinton and David Thomas) to pay homage to Bertold Brecht.

With Ron at the grand piano, and accompanied by the London Sinfonietta, Russell sang The Mandalay Song. This was the perfect piece for them to perform - and as many people said after the concert, it sounded as though it was a Sparks song

Ron and Russell were really touched by the huge applause they received when they walked out on stage and likewise the applause and cheers they received after their performance.

All of the artists performing (including Ron and Russell) returned to the stage at the end of the concert for a rousing rendition of The Solidarity Song

Sparks to make guest appearance at Meltdown
Ron and Russell will be taking part in Stand Bravely Brothers, the homage to Brecht on 23 June as part of Patti Smith's Meltdown.

Other artists appearing include Marc Almond, The Finn Brothers, Antony (of ...and The Johnsons), Martha Wainwright, The Dresden Dolls.

They will be performing with the London Sinfonietta

for tickets go to:

www.rfh.org.uk/meltdown

but be quick as availability is limited

Gorillaz include Sparks in their iTunes playlist
The Gorillaz have listed 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' in their playlist on iTunes.

Justin Hawkins covers Sparks
As has been widely reported in the media recently Justin Hawkins, lead singer of The Darkness, has recorded a version of This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us.

Justin has been recording a solo record and told British paper The Sun that This Town...would be the first single

Ron and Russell have heard the version and given it their thumbs up

There is already considerable speculation as to when this will be released. As and when we hear any confirmed details (as opposed to gossip and further speculation) we will post the update here

Album news -
Below is an excerpt from the new Fan Club newsletter (Fan Club membership is available through the Sparks Mart)

No time for play these days...Ron and Russell are feverishly working like mad scientists on their followup to Lil’ Beethoven (which is quite frankly, very hard to follow up)! However, the Maels are now fiercely challenging their former masterpiece and promise to equal, if not exceed its brilliance. Dean and Tammy are working hard to make sure they out-do themselves on this one as well.

And now it can be told...after a year and a half of hard work, Russell informs us that the new album is “Not for the timid!” They’re taking it up a notch. “It’s elaborate, excessive, adventurous, more extreme, with lots of vocals! And there is much more diversified nstrumentation on the new album.”

Our verbose vocalist continues, “We’ve attempted to push the parameters for those who thought Lil’
Beethoven was about as far as things could get pushed. Yet, we think the whole Sparks world will now live in peace and harmony with the scheme of the new Sparks album.”

The new opus features three pieces (we hesitate to call them ‘songs’), which are quite expansive -up to six, and seven minutes long! The band’s official statement is as follows:

“We’ve drawn a line in the sand with our new album. If you’re coming with us, step right over the line!”

The album is now completed.

Mojo Magazine: Franz/Sparks
The January 2005 issue of UK's Mojo Magazine reports the following:
"Sparks Of Pleasure"
Franz Ferdinand get props from the Maels then get an invite to Buckingham Palace.
After their punch-up in Paris in November, Franz Ferdinand have ended an astounding year by being courted by Sparks and the British Royal Family.
Having met Sparks socially in Los Angeles in the summer, Ron and Russell Mael presented them with a specially-composed song.
"We're really big fans of Sparks so it was a real great experience to meet them," commented Alex Kapranos suggestively. "Obviously it would be a real honour to get a chance to work with them at some point in the future. " It was also reported that the collaborative song will appear on a Franz Ferdinand-assembled Sparks best-of to be released next year on the Domino label.

This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us is included on an album to celebrate the infamous Biba Boutique

BIBA - CHAMPAGNE & NOVOCAINE

OVERVIEW
A New Album Celebrating The Iconic BIBA Label and Store From the Record Label that Brought You the Pre-Punk Collection 'SEX Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die'

September 2004 marks 40 years since the first Biba boutique was started by Barbara Hulanicki and her late husband, Stephen Fitz-Simon. Begun as a mail order company, the Biba brand went on to become one of the most evocative names in British fashion. To mark this special anniversary, the London record label Only Lovers Left Alive will be releasing 'Biba' - Champagne & Novocaine a collection of music based around the tracks that were the musical backdrop to Biba in its final glorious incarnation - an opulent, huge lifestyle store situated in the former Derry and Toms building on Kensington High Street.

Compiled by Delissia Howard (buyer and the body of Biba), with help from Barbara Hulanicki this collection features the artists whose music shaped the cultural period through which Biba existed.,many of whom played at the venue's Rainbow Room. Tracks from The New York Dolls, Marlene Dietrich, David Bowie, Edith Piaf, Tim Hardin, the legendary Tiny Tim and many others, will recall a special time and a special place where it was not unusual to see "Freddy Mercury slumped on a gigantic moquette sofa, in white satin loon pants and an old overcoat, ignored and alone, framed by bronze in the window of ex-Derry and Toms Biba" Delissia, quoted in 2004.

LA/SF Thanks!! 04-12-2004:
Sparks:"Thank You, San Francisco and Los Angeles!!"

After this weekend's concerts in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Sparks wish to thank everyone for the tremendous response they received in both concert cities. Also, the band wants to send a special thanks to both Randy Lewis at the LA Times and John Payne at the LA Weekly for their continued support and praise of Lil' Beethoven and the band. In the Monday April 12 edition of the Times, Lewis comments after seeing the Henry Fonda Theater show, "Lil' Beethoven does raise legitimate points about the lack of imagination and ambition in much of what's on the charts these days and brazenly challenges fans and other musicians to expand their horizons. Conceptually and musically, it's (Sparks) most accomplished work." And Payne states in the LA Weekly show preview, " In an era when pop sameness has reached true crisis proportions, Ron and Russell were forced, you see, to take drastic measures, to strive, to make something magnificent, and not just settle for easy pop poo-poo. And in case you hadn't heard, their live shows are mind-blowers." And I think those in attendance at San Francisco and LA will agree, these shows were truly mind-blowers!!

Thanks everyone for a memorable weekend.
